HJIS Preventative Steps regarding 2019 Novel Coronavirus

Dear HJIS Parents & Guardians,

We would like to thank those of you who have expressed special interest in our schools efforts in preventing the spread of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus to our school community. Please allow this email to provide you with a full scope of our endeavours to keep our students, faculty, and parents healthy and safe.

The following actions have been done within our HJIS (Yokohama) campus:

(Please note: several emails, demonstrations, weekly newsletter updates, and other means of communication have been used to spread awareness of the following)…

  1. All students are asked to use Hand Sanitizer before entering school.
  2. Students and teachers are encouraged to wear masks when applicable.
  3. Students have been asked and shown how to use proper coughing and sneezing etiquette.
    • Covering mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing and/or sneezing
      • Coughing or sneezing into arm if tissue is not available
    • Disposing of the tissue afterwards
    • After coughing or sneezing, washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
    • Wearing a mask if sneezing and/or cough continues at a high rate
  4. Students have been reminded to wash their hands regularly throughout the day.
    • Proper hand washing posters are spread across our campus
  5. Signs have been placed in every bathroom demonstrating how to appropriately close the lid before flushing the toilet to ensure low rates of airborne pathogens.
  6. All handrails, door handles, etc. have been washed daily with disinfectant to diminish unwanted germs, etc.
  7. Our school nurse checks every student that reports to her office for signs and symptoms of influenza-like illnesses.
    • All students who seek medical treatment for influenza-like symptoms must return to school with a “Certificate of Recovery” – signed and dated by their physician.
    • Soon, we may check students upon entering the building to see if they have a fever
  8. Certain school events have been cancelled to ensure outside guests do not come on campus at any time.
  9. We continually follow guidelines provided to us by local health officials, The Kanagawa Prefecture Office of Education, The Japanese Ministry of Education, and other local health agencies.
    • Additionally, we contact medical experts in any situation that we feel we need further guidance.
  10. We have encouraged parents to keep their children home if they any symptoms related to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus
  11. We have recently sent out an email asking any parents to report foreign travel to certain countries – so that we may ask them additional questions and/or ask them to keep their children at home if necessary to provide adequate incubation time.
  12. In the event that we are directed to ask students to stay at home (school closure), we have a plan to provide education via online resources and communication.

We will continue to keep the priority on the health and safety of our students and staff. Many of us also have our own children that attend HJIS and we will continue to make decisions “loco parentis” – as we have the legal duty to take responsibility for your child while at school. All decisions have and will be made with the child first in mind.

Thank you for your continued support and effort.

Please feel free to contact us directly with any more questions or concerns.

PS – We have recently designed a HJIS Blog to keep you up-to-date with frequently asked questions, policy changes, etc. This is part of our continual effort to keep you, our HJIS family, rightfully informed at all times.
